Norman (Norm) Obert Dronen (or “Dr. D.”) was born on 9 October 1945, in Shelton, Washington, to Norman and Roberta Dronen. Growing up on the Olympic Peninsula within that scenic and lush, green-forested place, just outside of Olympia, Washington, and the Olympic National Forest and Park, it was hard for anyone not to fall in love with nature there. Norm, known to those close to him as “Butch,” was always close to his older brother, Vern Dronen, known as “Buck”; they did everything together while growing up. Later in life when the two brothers lived apart, Norm's love for getting “the” buck, with or without his brother Buck, defined much of his recreational life and relaxation with his family (Supp. Fig. S1).
