Mary Beverley-Burton, 92, of Guelph, Ontario, died on 25 February 2023 after several difficult years with loss of mobility, advancing dementia, and isolation during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic. An only child, she was born to Malcolm and Agnes Beverley-Burton in Abergavenny, South Wales, on 10 June 1930. Mary may have been fascinated by parasites at the age of 8. In an early biography about her it was said that a Welsh purveyor of patent medicines in the weekly market exhibited “specimens of tapeworms taken from little girls from up in the valleys,” possibly stoking her interest in parasitic worms. Also, from an early age, Mary became an avid horsewoman and passed this love on to her children.

Mary graduated from University College, Aberystwyth University. While there, she was influenced by Professor Gwendolyn Rees, Fellow of the Royal Society. She went on to earn her Ph.D. in 1958 on studies...
