Alexandr Vladimirich Gusev, an honorary member of the ASP, died at the age of 82, on Dec. 31, 1999, in a home for retired scientists near St. Petersburg, Russia. Born in Korocha, District Kursk, Russia, on July 5, 1917, he led a turbulent life, overshadowed by the unfortunate circumstances of his native land. Educated in the University of Leningrad, under the tutelage of a famous parasitologist, Prof. A. V. Dogiel, Gusev—Sasha to his many friends—did not take up his scientific career in earnest until the end of WWII, during which he served in the ranks of the Red Army, rising to the rank of lieutenant and earning a chestful of decorations.
