There is a general absence of reference materials devoted to diseases of children in developing countries. Manual of Tropical Pediatrics helps to fulfill this need. Its 22 chapters and appendix attempt to provide a “practical source of guidance … for pediatricians and health care personnel in tropical countries ….” Among the highlights of this book are excellent introductory chapters that provide an overview of pediatric health in the developing world, basic child health care, and failure to thrive. The first chapter is lovingly written and provides, among other things, a unique history of global child health initiatives.
