Members of the American Society of Parasitologists and honored guests, it is my great pleasure to introduce the Ward Medalist for 2001, Dr. David James Marcogliese. It was a very difficult job for me to prepare this introduction, not because of a lack of stellar scientific accomplishments; Dr. Marcogliese is a world-renowned scientist who has distinguished himself in several fields of parasite ecology. However, as I sampled the opinions of his many friends and colleagues, I discovered Dave has that sort of charismatic personality which is much more interesting than his science. For example, Dr. Tim Goater, his best friend and roommate during his graduate student days, was not at all reticent about calling him Dr. Marcosleazy. Dave a sleazeball? Dr. Goater sent a photo of Dave, dressed for a typical night out on the town, to demonstrate his point.
