John Holmes began his Ph.D. work under the supervision of Asa Chandler at Rice University. Unfortunately, Chandler passed away before John completed his studies, and John finished under the direction of Clark P. Read. All 3 of these men had, or were to have, a significant impact on parasitology over the years. Holmes was to move on to the University of Alberta in Edmonton, where he was to have a highly successful career in research and teaching. He received the Henry Baldwin Ward Medal from the American Society of Parasitologists and served as the Society's President. In no small measure, the Ward Medal was based on research John completed at Rice while working on his Ph.D. degree.
