Dr. Gary L. Uglem of Bemidji, Minnesota, died 23 October 2002 after a short illness. Gary's contributions to the discipline of parasite physiology are well documented in 47 scientific publications, including Science, Parasitology, Journal of Parasitology, Experimental Parasitology, and the International Journal for Parasitology, plus several book reviews, numerous presentations at scientific meetings, and a number of invited lectures. This body of work largely reflects expertise he acquired while working as a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow in the laboratory of Clark P. Read at Rice University. Gary was active in numerous professional organizations including the American Society of Parasitologists (ASP), the American Microscopical Society, the Annual Midwestern Conference of Parasitologists (AMCOP), the American Society of Zoologists, the Association of Southeastern Biologists, the Southeastern Society of Parasitologists, and the Kentucky Academy of Science.
