When we started this series a few years ago, our aim was to identify as many benchmark papers as possible in the Journal of Parasitology, reprint them, and then to find a person to write an ‘update.’ While at the ICOPA meetings in Vancouver in August, 2002, John Oaks (Associate Editor for Special Projects) and I had a long discussion about this process. Eventually, it is our goal to pull all the ‘Defining’ papers together and publish them as a book to be used as a supplement for regular textbooks in the teaching of parasitology to undergraduate students. Toward this end, John and I concluded that we should not only reprint classic papers from the Journal of Parasitology in this series but also make an effort to include current investigators from a variety of fields.
