I joined our Society as a graduate student more than 40 yr ago and fondly recall the encouragement and support afforded me by senior members. I am pleased and indeed proud of the various ways in which we continue to encourage, support, and nurture students through various activities, including symposia, paper competitions, and travel grants. Here, at our annual meetings, students not only establish scientific collaborations but also lifelong friendships. It is to the graduate students in the audience, particularly those who aspire to an academic career, that my reflections are dedicated. I have been fortunate in having led a privileged and rewarding life in academia, due in no small part to the pleasure of my association with undergraduate and graduate students.
