Dr. Minchella, President of the American Society of Parasitologists, Dr. Goater, Dr. Gardner, fellow members of the Society, colleagues and friends, I am truly and profoundly honored to have been selected as the 2005 Henry Baldwin Ward medalist. To receive such an award represents without any doubt, one of the most exciting events in my academic career. This important distinction from my peers of the Society is also one that I never expected. Unfortunately, due to the imminent arrival of Hurricane Dennis on the coast of Alabama and Florida, I could not present the acceptance speech in the special session during the meeting. Most people were able to return home, and it is my understanding nobody was hurt by storms produced by Dennis, including those who had to spend almost 3 days in Mobile until the airport was reopened.
