The business meeting was called to order by President Dennis Minchella at approximately 2030 hr. As a result of Hurricane Dennis bearing down on the city of Mobile, the Riverview Plaza Hotel—scheduled site of the 2005 ASP annual meeting—invoked the “Force Majeur” clause of our contract and informed local committee chair Steve Kayes that the hotel would be closed the next day (Saturday, 9 July 2005) and that guests would be moved to a shelter. At the Council meeting of 8 July it was decided to alter the scientific program to allow students to present their papers, continue with the scheduled opening reception aboard the Battleship Alabama, then close the annual meeting so that members could obey government evacuation orders and otherwise make travel arrangements before the arrival of Hurricane Dennis.
