Steve J. Upton, age 57, died Thursday, 29 July 2010, after a courageous, decade-long battle against cancer, in Manhattan, Kansas, where he had lived the past 24 years. Steve was born 14 June 1953, in Portland, Oregon, the son of Edward J. and Helen C. (Karle) Upton. He grew up in Forest Grove, Oregon, and spent his summers at Olallie Lake Resort working in the summer family business. He graduated from Forest Grove High School in 1971 and worked several seasons for the Forest Service in fire suppression, including being a member of the hot-shot Helitack Crew. He earned his B.S. (1975) in Zoology from Oregon State University, Corvallis, Oregon; his M.S. (1981) in Biology (Parasitology), under the direction of D. W. Duszynski, at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico; and his Ph.D. (1983) in Zoology–Entomology, under the direction of W. L. Current, from Auburn University, Auburn, Alabama....
