FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

American Society of Parasitologists Relaunches Journal of Parasitology for the Next 100 Years

Journal of Parasitology – The American Society of Parasitologists (ASP) has announced that it has eliminated page charges for members publishing in the society’s journal, The Journal of Parasitology (JP). This change will go into effect with the 2019 volume of the journal. 2019 will also bring a new publishing workflow that features continuous online publication and a reduction in the number of printed issues.

As the official journal of ASP, JP now states in its instructions to authors: “There are no page charges when the corresponding author is a member of ASP at the time of publication.” Non-member authors will pay $75 per page, but are encouraged to become members of the society. Membership is available at various levels and with one-year and three-year options. With more than 700 members worldwide from industry, government, and academia, ASP is dedicated to the study and teaching of parasitology.

The change was announced at ASP’s recent annual meeting in Cancun, Mexico.

“Beginning in January 2019, we are relaunching The Journal of Parasitology for its second century of publication with a complete revision of our policies, charges, and distribution,” said Rich Clopton, the editor of JP. “We believe ASP is in a position to make The Journal of Parasitology the journal of choice for the next generation of parasitologists, and eliminating page charges is the first step. Publishing in JP is one of the greatest benefits of being a member of ASP, and eliminating page charges for members makes it even more beneficial.”

Also going into effect in 2019 is a new publishing workflow that features continuous online publication. Articles will be posted online in their final, edited version. Systematic and taxonomic papers will thus comply with the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature so that new species names will be valid as soon as the articles are posted online. While the journal will continue to publish six online issues per year, print subscribers will receive the entire print volume in one mailing at the end of the year.

These changes are designed to adapt to the quickly changing world of scholarly journal publishing.

Dr. Clopton explained that, “Publishing a quality peer-reviewed journal takes time, but your manuscript shouldn't be delayed by a print publication schedule. Many if not most scientists largely access the literature electronically, so it’s time to make electronic distribution work for JP and our members. You can have quality peer-review and rapid publication. Our new continuous publishing model will significantly decrease turn-around time to meet our goal of a submission to publication timeline of 8-10 weeks. Other constituents worry about the stability of electronic publication, and so we will continue to print and distribute the entire volume in December of each year to maintain the permanence and durability of ink-on-paper publication.”

For more than a century, JP has published basic and applied research in the field of parasitology. In addition to taxonomic papers that name and describe new species, the journal also publishes the latest research in ecology, immunology, parasite life cycles, molecular biology, host-parasite interactions, and other disciplines.

The journal is published by ASP in conjunction with Allen Press, Inc., an industry leader in scholarly publishing services and management.
