From the CPNP Member

Pharmacists have the knowledge and skills for establishing an important role in substance abuse prevention, education, and collaborative treatment management. This book serves as a foundation for any pharmacist or healthcare professional interested in substance abuse. The authors dedicate the book to recovery professionals who provide drug abuse treatment, aftercare, education, and prevention services, however written for medical professionals, students, instructors, and the general public. Topics range from the classification of psychoactive drugs to alcohol, illicit drugs, and a brief overview of other addictions including compulsive gambling and eating disorders. The authors facilitate learning by providing a detailed explanation of how the drug evolved historically and cite personal experiences from drug abusers, law enforcement officers, and substance abuse multidisciplinary treatment team members, which makes this book unique. Pharmacokinetics, the physiological effect of the drug, abuse, dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal symptoms of each drug are also discussed. The book is filled with many illustrations, easy to read, and an excellent source to familiarize oneself to psychoactive drugs of abuse. Although this 600 page book is not intended to be a quick reference guide, it is a must have for pharmacists and students with interest in substance abuse. Uppers Downers All Arounders is a great read that is hard to put down!
