Abstract
Brianaudea, nom. nov., is introduced as a replacement name for NaudeaKensley, 1979 (Crustacea: Isopoda: Bathynataliidae) which is a junior homonym of NaudeaMeyer & Rodrigues, 1966 (Chelicerata: Acariformes: Iolinidae). Naudea Kensley contains one species that is now Brianaudea louwae (Kensley, 1979), comb. nov.
The isopod genus NaudeaKensley, 1979 is one of three genera in the seroloid family Bathynataliidae Kensley, 1978 (Boyko et al., 2008 onwards) and contains only the type species, Naudea louwaeKensley, 1979. This genus name, however, is a homonym of the mite genus name NaudeaMeyer & Rodrigues, 1966, that currently contains only the type species, Naudea richindaMeyer & Rodrigues, 1966. Note that Baker & Delfinado (1976) considered Pausia Kuznetzov & Livshitz, 1972 a junior synonym of Naudea Meyer & Rodrigues, which would include as many as five species in Naudea Meyer & Rodrigues. Subsequent authors, however, have used both genera as valid (e.g., Kaźmierski, 1998; Theron et al., 2012; Silva et al., 2017) without discussing the earlier proposed synonymy.
The opportunity is taken here to introduce a new name for this preoccupied isopod genus as an honorific for the late Brian Kensley as research on bathynataliid isopods is rather sparse and this homonymy is unlikely to be resolved elsewhere in the near future; the last work on the group was that of Poore (2005, coincidentally published in the Brian Kensley Memorial issue of PBSW).
