I pondered for quite a while on how to bring to life, in a few pages, the almost forty years of anthropological practice in Israel which I initiated under turbulent historical circumstances. By giving a very personal, associative account, I hope that my experiences will become "experience near" rather than "experience distant" for my American colleagues. Apart from this associative account, I want to describe the social, cultural, and ideological context in which I began working because it fundamentally influenced the kind of theoretical model I developed to guide me in practice.
