Although it never before occurred to me to organize colleagues to protect our professional and ethical standards, I also never believed that I would be so consistently pressured (sometimes threatened) by representatives of my government to participate in possible harm to the very people whose interests I was originally hired to protect as an applied anthropologist. I did not expect to be asked to cover up wrongdoing, and, in some cases, to break the law and risk my professional status.
