John Lafayette Magee passed away on December 16, 2005 in Moraga, CA, after a short illness. After pursuing a successful academic career at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, he relocated at the Biology and Medicine Division of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Berkeley, CA, as a senior staff scientist, where he remained until his formal retirement in 1986.

John earned his A.B. in 1935 from Mississippi College, M.S. in 1936 from Vanderbilt University, and Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1939 from the University of Wisconsin. In his doctoral research, carried under the supervision of Prof. Farrington Daniels, he made an important contribution to the chemistry and kinetics of flames.
