A small workshop entitled International Review Meeting on Low Dose Rate Radioepidemiology of High Background Radiation Areas was held at the Ohtemachi Building, Tokyo, January 15–16, 2010. The workshop was organized and funded by the Health Research Foundation (HRF), Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI), and the Kansai Atomic Conference. The Organizing Committee consisted of a member each from HRF and CRIEPI plus one member affiliated with both HRF and CRIEPI and the National Institute of Radiological Sciences. Participants were chosen for their acknowledged expertise in epidemiology, physical dosimetry, biological dosimetry and radiation biology. The impetus for holding the workshop was to review the extensive past and ongoing research on the health effects associated with living in areas of high levels of natural background radiation, consider the importance and uniqueness of such research, and make recommendations on future research endeavors.
