When asked during a lecture in Jülich 1980 on the role of mathematical modeler in radiobiology, he responded

David E. Charlton passed away on July 16, 2013 at his home in Apple Hill, Ontario with his wife Sylvia and children by his side, after a long and productive career as a radiation biophysicist. Although living most of his life in Canada, Dave was born in Wallsend, Tyne & Wear in England in 1936. He studied physics at Durham University where he received a B.Sc. in 1958. At that time obtaining a job with a science degree was easy, and in contrast to today, David remarked on the numerous offers he received before he had even completed his finals.
