It is demonstrated that administration of mixtures of radioprotectors not only increase the degree of protection after 30 days compared with that for each substance given separately, but also diminish the toxicity of such compounds as AET or MEA. The most potent mixture of radioprotectors yields a dose-reduction factor of 2.8 and more. When supplemented by treatment with isogenic bone marrow after irradiation, this dose-reduction factor increases to 3.7 or more. Study of the long-term effects reveals that most of the mice irradiated with 2000 R or more die of radiation pneumonitis within a period of 6 months.
