Inflorescences of Tradescantia paludosa were treated with 5-fluorodeoxyuridine (FUdR) to test the effects of this compound on radiation-induced chromatid aberrations. Treatment with 10-6 M FUdR during G2 significantly reduced the chromatid exchange frequency but had no effect on the chromatid or isochromatid breaks. Treatment during S disturbed all three of the aberration frequencies and caused a 15-hour delay in the appearance of chromosome aberrations. When inflorescences were allowed to recover in water after FUdR treatment and before irradiation, the effects on the chromatid and isochromatid breaks were abolished with a 1 1/2-hour recovery period while the exchange frequency returned to the control level after 3 hours in water.
