Interstitial-cell (Leydig) tumors of the testes were found in rats 2 years after they had been subjected to localized testicular irradiation. While only one neoplasm appeared in 45 nonirradiated control rats, 6 of 62 rats irradiated with 150 R, and 40 of 74 rats irradiated with 500 R had interstitial-cell neoplasms. All the neoplasms were benign and confined to the testes, and none metastasized. Apparently these neoplasms developed from hyper-plastic interstitial cells, and gonadotropin stimulation is suggested as a promoting factor in their pathogenesis.
