Colloidal silver is produced when aqueous silver solutions containing gelatine absorb ionizing radiation. The reduction is accelerated in the presence of organic solutes. The colloidal silver is solubilized when irradiated in the presence of added nitrate. Colloidal silver bromide is relatively stable toward ionizing radiation but undergoes reduction to colloidal silver when organic solutes are added prior to irradiation. Reduction rates were measured for systems having known average initial particle sizes and concentrations.
