Spores of the cellular slime mold produce and secrete a substance called an auto-inhibitor which inhibits their germination, and when the concentration of this substance increases, spore germination is repressed. However, it was found that when the spores are irradiated with certain doses of γ-ray, the speed and percentage of germination increase even in the presence of such an inhibiting substance. This is not the result of the damage done to the auto-inhibitor. The possible reasons for this promotion of germination by γ-irradiation are discussed.
