The effect of gamma irradiation on the synthesis of RNA and selected proteins in Escherichia coli strain 15T-JG151 was investigated. The results showed that tRNA and ribosomes are not radically affected, whereas the two induced enzymes tested, beta-galactosidase and tryptophanase, are almost totally depressed. Significantly, the ribosomal proteins are synthesized but at least two inducible enzymes are not. In the light of recent findings suggesting different mechanisms for transcription of ribosomal RNA and mRNA for inducible enzymes, it is suggested that the process of inactivation from irradiation differs for different types of genes.
