Liver tumors were induced in mice by neutron irradition followed by a dose of CCl4. The relation between tumor induction and neutron dose was found to be linear at low doses. This is interpreted to mean that although the tumor-induction process requires two or more independent events, only one of these can be considered a mutation. This result may or may not be applicable to other tumor systems.
