Using range-restricted electrons as probes it was possible to show that the catalase of B. megaterium 14581 (ATCC) spores lies just inside a permeability barrier approximately 275 Å thick, the outer limit of which is about 350 Å from the spore's surface. The catalase itself appears to be separated into two fractions by a second barrier to permeability at about 1000 Å from the cell's surface.
