Microdosimetry and the consideration of stochastic processes on the cellular level (biological stochastics) are applied to the analysis of the 3.5-day effect of x-rays on chick embryos. Vital processes are subject to such stochastic factors. The experimental results are in good agreement with sensitive volumes about 2 μm in diameter. This approximates the volumes of cell nuclei. The theoretically deduced lower limit of the diameter of the sensitive volumes increases toward the diameter of the whole cell, when certain environmental parameters are changed during the incubation after the irradiation.
