The electron spin resonance spectrum of ultraviolet irradiated levulinic acid in frozen acidic (${\rm H}_{2}{\rm SO}_{4}\ 2\ M$) solutions was investigated. Studying the spectra as a function of temperature permitted the identification of the radicals${\rm CH}_{3},\ {\rm HC}\cdot {\rm O},\ {\rm C}\cdot {\rm H}_{2}-{\rm CH}_{2}-{\rm R}$ and C·OOH, R being either$\matrix\format\c\kern.8em&\c\kern.8em&\c\kern.8em&\c\\ {} & {} & {} & {\rm O} \\ {} & {} & \diagup \diagup & {} \\ - & {\rm C} & {} & {} \\ {} & {} & \diagdown & {} \\ {} & {} & {} & {\rm OH} \endmatrix \text{or} \matrix\format\c\kern.8em&\c\kern.8em&\c\kern.8em&\c\\ {} & {} & {} & {\rm O} \\ {} & {} & \diagup \diagup & {} \\ - & {\rm C} & {} & {} \\ {} & {} & \diagdown & {} \\ {} & {} & {} & {\rm CH}_{3} \endmatrix$.
