Investigation of radiation sensitization by cobalt hexammine chloride of B. megaterium spores either in aqueous suspension or equilibrated at 22 Torr water vapor pressure reveals a unique duplication of sensitizing action in both the presence and absence of oxygen. Ethanol reverses this cobalt-complex sensitization in anoxic, but not oxic, spore suspensions, whereas t-butanol has no protective effect. A series of Co(III) complexes is tested for anoxic sensitization to compare with the hexammine complex. The sensitizing ability of these compounds is much reduced or absent when bidentate or multidentate organic ligands replace the ammine coordinates to cobalt.
