The usefulness of cross sections differential in the angle and energy of ejected electrons in showing the several mechanisms of electron ejection is pointed out. These mechanisms are direct Coulomb ejection of inner- and outer-shell electrons, charge transfer to continuum states, autoionization and Auger emission, and electron promotion followed by Auger emission. Examples of distributions of electrons are given for various projectiles, targets, and energies. Recent improvements in the theoretical treatments are noted. Dependence of the Auger cross sections on projectile type and energy are discussed. Satellite production and its effect on fluorescence yield are considered.
