A simple but powerful method of constructing a consistent set of energy distributions for secondary electrons produced by electron impact is presented. The method uses graphical presentations known as the Platzman and the Fano plots. Recommended energy distributions for He and N2 are given for a wide range of primary-electron energies (50-100 keV). Data necessary for extrapolating the distribution to higher incident energy are also included.
