The relative effectiveness of fast neutrons with respect to high-energy X rays in the creation of stable free radicals has been investigated. Alanine powder was used as the test material, and the concentrations of free radicals compared in an electron spin resonance spectrometer. It is believed that both the accuracy and the precision of our measurements show a considerable improvement over those reported previously, with a final uncertainty of less than 8% on the value of 0.65. Some relevant radiobiological data are examined in the light of this result.
