The activity of ribonuclease was protected against radiolytic destruction when the enzyme was associated with DNA, under conditions such that the nucleic acid was not acting as a scavenger; <tex-math>${\rm D}_{37}\text{'}{\rm s}$</tex-math> were raised four- to sixfold. The relation between losses of enzymatic activity and of amino acid residues suggests that both his and tyr are involved in the catalytic ability of ribonuclease.
