The effect of X radiation on the membranes of heparinized and of nonheparinized Ehrlich ascites tumor (E.A.T.) cells was investigated by using the technique of micro-electrophoresis. Exposure to 6000 R significantly decreased the anodic electrophoretic mobility of E.A.T. cells measured 5-6 hr later, while the mobility of heparinized E.A.T. cells was increased under similar conditions. A possible mechanism for the biochemical interaction of heparin with cellular membranes damaged by radiation was tested experimentally. Observations were consistent with the proposed mechanism.
