In this paper we study the propagation of shock waves in elastic materials that do not conduct heat. We derive a differential equation relating the strain and strain gradient behind the wave when the region ahead is unstrained and at constant entropy. Using this equation we are able to give conditions under which the wave will grow or decay at a given time. Generally, the results are qualitatively the same as in the purely mechanical theory.
