Abstract

Chromosome numbers are reported for 349 individuals of 116 taxa and 2 hybrids in 13 genera from Canada and the United States. The majority of the reports are for asters listed in this paper under the generic names Symphyotrichum (93 reports) and Eurybia (51 reports) plus species of Doellingeria, Oclemena, and Sericocarpus and for goldenrods in Solidago (171 reports). Corrected identifications for four previous reports are also listed. The following are first reports for these taxa: Solidago jejunifolia, 2n = 9II from Wisconsin; Solidago fallax var. molina, 2n = 18 from Québec; and Symphyotrichum falcatum subsp. falcatum, 2n = 10 from Northwest Territories. Multiple counts are first reports for a particular taxon in a province or state: e.g., Solidago salicina, 2n = 18 from North Carolina; Symphyotrichum grandiflorum, 2n = 60 from Virginia; and Symphyotrichum welshii, 2n = 16 from Wyoming. The following are all first reports for the province of Prince Edward Island: Solidago nemoralis subsp. nemoralis, 2n = 18; Symphyotrichum lanceolatum var. lanceolatum, 2n = 64, Symphyotrichum puniceum var. puniceum, 2n = 16.

Determining the distribution patterns of cytotypes requires numerous counts from the range of a taxon. The determinations listed below are reported as contributions to such studies. This is the ninth and last in a continuing series of general reports on Astereae by the first author's laboratory (Semple 1985; Semple and Chmielewski 1987; Semple and Cook 2004; Semple et al. 1989, 1992, 1993, 2001, 2015).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Meiotic counts were made from pollen mother cells (PMCs) dissected from buds fixed in the field in 3: 1 ethanol (EtOH): glacial acetic acid for a minimum of 24 hours under refrigeration and subsequently stored under refrigeration in 70% EtOH. Mitotic counts were made from root tip cells taken from transplanted wild rootstocks or from seedlings grown from achenes collected in the wild. Root tips were pretreated in 0.01% colchicine or saturated paradichlorobenzene for 2–3 hours, fixed in either Modified Carnoy's Fixative (4: 3: 1 chloroform: EtOH: glacial acetic acid) or Acetic Alcohol Fixative (3: 1 EtOH: glacial acetic acid) for a minimum of 24 hours under refrigeration and hydrolyzed in 1N HCl for 30 min at 60 °C before squashing. Anther sacs containing PMCs and meristematic root tips were squashed in 1% acetic orcein and counts of chromosomes were made from freshly prepared material.

Vouchers for all Semple collections (including with other collectors) and all Cook collections (including with other collectors) are deposited at WAT at MT as part of the transferred WAT herbarium (acronyms follow Thiers 2018) and should be cited as at WAT. Beck collections are deposited at WICH. Nomenclature follows that in Flora North America Vol. 20 (Flora North America Editorial Committee 2006) or changes listed in Semple (2018). Identifications were made by J. C. Semple. In some cases, voucher specimens did not fit a published taxon description in one or more minor traits, such as amount of pubescence; these cases are indicated by the “aff.” qualifier in the Appendix.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Chromosome numbers are reported for 349 individuals of 116 taxa and 2 hybrids in 13 genera from Canada and the United States. Wild populations were sampled in eight provinces and territories in Canada and 23 states in the United States. In total, 282 reports are for asters and goldenrods: Ampelaster, Canadanthus, Doellingeria, Eurybia (51 reports), Herrickia, Oclemena, Sericocarpus, and Symphyotrichum (93 reports); Solidago (126 reports) and Euthamia. Corrected identifications of four previous reports are presented at the end of the Appendix. The following are first reports for the taxa: Solidago jejunifolia, 2n = 9II from Wisconsin; Solidago fallax var. molina, 2n = 18 from Québec. Multiple counts are first reports for a particular taxon in a province or state: e.g., Solidago lepida var. lepida, 2n = 54 from New Brunswick; Solidago salicina, 2n = 18 from North Carolina; Symphyotrichum falcatum subsp. falcatum, 2n = 10 from Northwest Territories; Symphyotrichum grandiflorum, 2n = 60 from Virginia; and Symphyotrichum welshii, 2n = 16 from Montana and Wyoming.

Listed among the chromosome counts for Eurybia is a 2n = 36 report for E. surculosa from the top of Toxaway Falls, Transylvania Co., North Carolina; the voucher is Semple & Chmielewski 6215 (WAT), which was originally distributed as Aster avitus, the basionym for Eurybia avita, and was not cited in the report of A. avita from North Carolina (Semple 1982). The habitat was noted as the edge of a granitic outcrop, similar to that of true E. avita from Georgia and South Carolina, from where Semple et al. (1983) reported the species to be diploid. Brouillet (2006) listed E. avita as presumed extirpated from North Carolina; the site of Semple & Chmielewski 6215 was collected in 1981 and visited again in 1999 by J. C. Semple, who found the original habitat to have been highly disturbed due to the construction of a dam upstream from the falls. The identification of several tetraploids collected in northern Georgia and thought to be additional collections of E. avita are listed in the Appendix under the name E. surculosa as new and corrected reports. The changes in identification place all tetraploids in E. surculosa and all diploids in E. avita.

This list of chromosome counts is the ninth and last in the series by the Astereae Lab at the University of Waterloo noted in the opening paragraph above. In total, 2162 counts have been reported by the Astereae Lab in a series of reports published over more than three decades (Semple 1985; Semple and Chmielewski 1987; Semple and Cook 2004; Semple et al. 1989, 1992, 1993, 2001, 2015). Chromosome counts for individuals in 436 taxa in 51 genera now recognized have been reported, although many of the counts were reported at the time of publication under the misapplied names Aster, Haplopappus, and Machaeranthera.
