The impact of European settlement on the landscape and native plants and animals of New South Wales ha s been dramatic and largely detrimental. Between 1893 and 1921 alone, 25.7 million ha, or 32% of the State, were ringbarked and partially cleared. Much of the clearing occurred before the establishment of a system of nature conservation reserves in New South Wales, and still occurs widely.
