Central European forestry is in the midst of considerable changes. The increasing demand for a somewhat shrinking offering is leading to foreseeable gaps in supply. This trend should, however, be seen against the backdrop of the effects of climate change, which can be expected to result in more natural disasters and thus higher production risks. Especially in times of large-scale disasters, but also under normal conditions the timber industry is exposed to increasing globalisation. At the same time, there is a growing awareness in the population that existing resources should be protected; forestry companies are not immune from demands for “appropriate” management. The companies have to accept these trends as given and have to respond as well as possible. With an array of cost-reducing, risk-reducing and communication-improving measures, the Bavaria State Forest Enterprise shows how they deal with these challenges.
