Based on a brief survey in the autumn of 1998, the current situation in regional forest planning in Switzerland is presented. This new approach of regional forest planning is intended for all forests in all the cantons, but has, however, only been realised in a few cases. The putting into practice of this planning system on the owners' level is of great interest. Three examples from different regions of Switzerland present solution approaches. On a more theoretical level, new directions for the development of modern management planning are shown. The fixing of a strategy with regard to products and performances, conceptional process planning and the organisation of strategic and of operative controlling are decisive. Thus, a management plan is primarily a management instrument for the forest enterprise director and should, therefore, also be elaborated by him or her. The alterations thus involved are not yet generally accepted, but will surely be realised in the short term, thanks to the close relationship between the forest service and the forest owners.
