With an emphasis on biodiversity, this paper focuses on current trends in the Swiss forests. In particular, the continuity of these current trends over the coming decades and the permanent values which will influence Swiss forests and forestry in the future will be discussed. Most of the current trends may persist and include the growing forest area in regions with a weak agricultural potential, the pressure on forests due to urban sprawl, and intensified harvesting with more efficient methods due to the increased use of renewable energies while considering climate change. The forests may change to become more in accordance with the location and forest reserves may become more frequent. Sustainability and diversity are the main values which will shape forests and forestry also in the year 2050.
