Is consumption of forest products sustainable over the long term?
The article presents trends and an outlook for the forest sector, for Europe and Switzerland, from 1913 to 2030. The first half of the twentieth century saw over-use of European forests, but in the second half, the situation changed: consumption of forest products increased, while forests expanded, growing stock rose and Europe became a net exporter of timber. Official scenarios foresee a continuation of these trends in the twenty-first century. Yet, to this end, the forest sector must stay competitive. For example, mobilising enough energy wood, on a sustainable basis, is a major challenge for the sector. The forest sector has demonstrated in the past its flexibility and adaptability, and so could be well placed to lead the way towards the green economy.

L'article présente les tendances et perspectives du secteur forestier, en Europe et en Suisse, de 1913 à 2030. La première moitié du XXe siècle a vu une surexploitation des forêts européennes, mais dans la seconde moitié, la situation a changé: la consommation des produits forestiers a augmenté, tandis que les forêts étaient en expansion, le volume sur pied s'est accumulé, et l'Europe est devenue exportatrice nette de bois. Les scénarios officiels prévoient une continuation de ces tendances durant le XXIe siècle. Toutefois, pour cela, le secteur forestier doit rester compétitif. Mobiliser suffisamment de bois-énergie, de façon durable, pose par exemple un défi considérable au secteur. Le secteur forestier a su démontrer par le passé sa flexibilité et capacité d'adaptation, il est ainsi bien placé pour montrer aujourd'hui la voie vers une économie verte.

Der Artikel präsentiert Entwicklungen und Perspektiven im Forstsektor in Europa und der Schweiz von 1913 bis 2030. Während in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts Europas Wälder übernutzt wurden, änderte sich die Situation in der zweiten Hälfte. Der Holzkonsum nahm zu, gleichzeitig dehnte sich das Waldareal aus, der Vorrat stieg an, und Europa wurde zum Netto-Holzexporteur. Die offiziellen Szenarien erwarten für das 21. Jahrhundert eine ähnliche Entwicklung. Dafür muss der Forstsektor jedoch wettbewerbsfähig bleiben. Genügend Energieholz auf nachhaltige Weise zu ernten, stellt den Sektor beispielsweise vor beachtliche Herausforderungen. Der Forstsektor hat in der Vergangenheit seine Flexibilität und Anpassungsfähigkeit unter Beweis gestellt, womit er heute dazu prädestiniert ist, den Weg für eine grüne Wirtschaft aufzuzeigen.
