This commentary explores community participation in New Zealand (NZ), as described by qualitative data from NZ’s contribution to the Development of ICF Core Sets for SCI multicenter study. Three entirely local influences are also discussed: the Independent Living philosophy as championed by the late Professor Alan Clarke; NZ’s legislated policy of biculturalism; and the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC), NZ’s publicly funded, no-fault accident-related health scheme.
