A successful transition to adulthood is an essential health outcome. In addition to providing effective, multidisciplinary, and family-centered treatment after an injury, a key goal of rehabilitation for children and adolescents with a spinal cord injury (SCI) is to promote meaningful and satisfying lives. This includes not only fostering independence but also addressing the complex health issues that arise with age and living with an SCI. This article reviews the central areas of transition within the framework of emerging adulthood in individuals with pediatric-onset SCI, including education, employment, independent living, social development, sexuality, psychological functioning, medical complications, and adult health care.
