The health of individuals with spinal cord injury and disease (SCI/D) is influenced by many factors; among these is the relationship with health care providers. While research on the impact of patient-provider relationships is lacking as related to individuals with SCI/D, evidence from other areas of health care can provide insights and recommendations. This article reviews research evidence associated with adherence, disparities, and health management and offers practical recommendations for health care providers to implement in working with individuals with SCI/D.
