Violence-induced spinal cord injury (SCI) has increased dramatically over the past few decades. Gunshot wounds (GSWs) are the primary type of violence-induced SCI. The wounding potential of a GSW is discussed with respect to ballistics. The pattern of neurologic injury and recovery that can be expected is described for each of four groups of patients categorized by level of injury (tetraplegia versus paraplegia) and severity of injury (complete versus incomplete).
