Violence-induced spinal cord injury (SCI) has increased significantly in recent years. Little information is available, however, regarding the incidence and effects of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after violence-induced SCI. Issues related to incidence rates, psychological consequences, and mediating factors of PTSD after violence-induced SCI are reviewed. Recommendations for future research include the need for epidemiologic studies on the prevalence rates of violence-induced SCI, clinical controlled studies regarding the most effective PTSD treatments for violence-induced SCI, and the effects of PTSD on spinal cord rehabilitation units.
