In the past several decades, there has been a growing awareness of the interaction of the aging process and disability. Research has shown that disability influences not only the rate but also the quality of aging in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI). Clinicians caring for persons with SCI need to incorporate concepts of wellness education and disease prevention into the long-term follow-up paradigm. In this article, research on aging with SCI is reviewed and specific recommendations for management are provided.
