Maintaining health, achieving maximum functional ability, and creating a quality of life (QOL) should be the main outcomes of SCI rehabilitation. This article focuses on QOL issues, using a subjective view of QOL that stresses the person's own views of his/her life. Past literature suggests that QOL may be strongly related to being able to maintain community involvement. A QOL scale was correlated with both basic activities of daily living and with a community activities scale. The latter relationship was clearly the stronger one. Community involvement should be stressed as a way of maintaining QOL.
